The Impact of Globalization on National Law: Lessons for Wisconsin

The UW-Madison Center for World Affairs and the Global Economy (WAGE) is partnering with the Global Legal Studies Center to sponsor a series of workshops on law and globalization. These outreach workshops explore the effect of globalization on the increasingly blurred line between international and national law, focusing in particular on the growing presence of international law in our daily lives. The workshops are designed for local attorneys, policymakers, civil society groups, and any other interested groups.

All three events will be held from 2:45 - 6:00 PM at the Lubar Commons, 7200 Law School, on the Madison campus. Detailed agendas for all workshops are available at the individual event websites. Global Imbalances and the U.S. Dollar
"Global Imbalances and the U.S. Dollar: Doing Business in the World Economy" will be the focus of a half-day conference held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 from 11:30 – 5:00 at the Fluno Center for Executive Education in Madison. The conference will feature internationally-recognized experts who will discuss current trends in global finance and their impact on U.S. businesses. Topics include global currency imbalances and the role of China in the world economy. Among the confirmed speakers are:

  1. Jeffrey Frankel (Harvard University)
  2. Mike Knetter (Wisconsin School of Business)
  3. Catherine Mann (Institute for International Economics)
  4. Michael Melvin (Barclays Global Investors)
  5. Shang-Jin Wei (International Monetary Fund)

The event will be sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), Center for World Affairs and the Global Economy (WAGE), and LaFollette School of Public Affairs.
