New Country of Origin Marking Requirements for Saudi Arabia
In March the Saudi government issued new requirements mandating
that all imports into the country must bear an inerasable/indelible
mark showing their country of origin. These new regulations are
not country specific, affecting all products from all around the world.
The regulation’s stated intent is to help protect against
intellectual property infringement by making imitation and counterfeit
products known to the end user.
The Saudi importer must provide a written statement to Saudi customs to
the effect that they are now aware of the regulation and that they will
not import any more items which are noncompliant. Those found not
to be in compliance face a fine of 5,000 Saudi Riyal (US$1,333), and
must imprint the goods with proper markings within two weeks.
