Governor Doyle Announces $750,000 for Merit Gear and City of Antigo

Merit Gear Investing More Than $23 Million for Expansion That Will Lead to 45 New Jobs

ANTIGO - Governor Jim Doyle today announced that Merit Gear will receive $250,000 in Technology Zone tax credits and the City of Antigo will receive a $456,000 Community Development Block Grant. Merit Gear's $23.6 million expansion in Antigo is expected to create 45 jobs and retain 105. Governor Doyle made the announcement at a press conference in Antigo during his Northern Tour.

"Manufacturing is one of the real cornerstones of our state," Governor Doyle said. "I'm pleased to provide funding for this expansion project which will create opportunities for hardworking Wisconsin families and strengthen infrastructure in the City of Antigo."

Established in 1952, Merit Gear manufactures high-quality, precision gearing and gear boxes. This plant has undergone five expansions. The company will construct and equip a 50,000-square-foot. addition. It will also work with North Central Technical College in Antigo to train employees on the new equipment.

The City of Antigo will use its grant for storm water improvements, street reconstruction, and the replacement of water mains, sanitary sewer mains, curb and gutter to support the expansion. Total infrastructure cost is $1.6 million.
