Wisconsin Basic Economic Development Course, Nov 10-13, 2008 in Madison
For Immediate Release: August 19, 2008 MADISON - The "Wisconsin Basic Economic Development Course" (Wisconsin Basic Course) will educate upcoming economic developers, community leaders, bankers, government officials and Chamber executives, among others, in the fundamentals of economic development. The course is presented by the University of Wisconsin Center for Community and Economic Development in partnership with the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and the Wisconsin Economic Development Association (WEDA). Graduation from the Wisconsin Economic Development Course fulfills one of the prerequisites for those who wish to pursue the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) designation through IEDC. "By providing community leaders and economic development professionals with broad training in the nine core competencies," said Commerce Deputy Secretary Aaron Olver, "we believe communities will be more successful in economic development." This course is accredited by the IEDC and is the equivalent to IEDC's "Introduction to Economic Development" course in preparation for the IEDC Certification exam. For more information on IEDC certification and this course, see: http://www.iedconline.org/?p=BEDC. Registrations received prior to September will receive the "Early Bird" rate of $575 per person (If you need overnight lodging, please check with Andrea Rush on local options): (608) 265-8136 andrea.rush@uwex.edu). Registrations received after that date will be at the rate of $625. Enrollment is limited and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. WEDA will offer up to ten $100 scholarships to WEDA members who complete the course. Non-members who complete the course will receive a discount rate of $75 for membership in WEDA. Other scholarships are also being made available on an application and need basis. We have a core group of twenty-one certified economic developers in Wisconsin who are excited at the challenge of building additional leadership in economic development and in the profession through membership in WEDA and IEDC. This program is compatible with the educational mission of the UW Extension Center for Community and Economic Development. The Center provides applied research and training to economic development organizations and communities throughout the state of Wisconsin. Although the Center will be the primary sponsor and overall organizational/contractual entity, WEDA will play a critical secondary role in marketing, curriculum review and speaker development.
