Emergency Rule Requiring Carbon Monoxide Alarms to Take Effect October 1, 2008
For Immediate Release: September 11, 2008 MADISON - As of October 1, 2008, carbon monoxide alarms must be installed in most newly-constructed, multi-occupant residential buildings that contain fuel- burning appliances. "This emergency rule incorporates an important safety feature into new residential construction and provides guidance to the construction industry on complying with recently-passed legislation," said Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Aaron Olver. The Department of Commerce issued the new regulations as emergency rules as required by April 2008 legislation entitled 2007 Wisconsin Act 205. Affected residential buildings include tourist rooming houses (cabins), bed and breakfast establishments, and any public structures used for sleeping or lodging, such as hotels, motels, condominiums, apartment buildings, dormitories, fraternities, sororities, convents, seminaries, community-based residential facilities, and home shelters. Hospitals and nursing homes are not included, nor are most 1- and 2-family dwellings. The owners of these types of existing buildings will have until April 1, 2010 to install the carbon monoxide alarms.
