For Immediate Release: October 1, 2008 Project to Create 45 Jobs in Growing Biotechnology Field MADISON - Governor Jim Doyle today announced that SAFC, Inc., of Madison will receive $292,500 in Enterprise Development Zone tax credits for its $30 million expansion project in Verona. "Wisconsin continues to be a place that pushes the frontiers of life science and discovery through research and development," Governor Doyle said. "I'm pleased that SAFC has chosen to expand in Wisconsin, and that we could assist the company in bringing new, good-paying jobs to Dane County." SAFC, Inc. is a developer and manufacturer of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) for the pharmaceutical industry. The company is investing $30 million to construct and equip a new, large-scale manufacturing facility in Verona. The project is expected to create 45 jobs and retain 75 jobs, and will build on Wisconsin's leadership in the life science and biotechnology sectors. The Verona project is the fourth Sigma-Aldrich facility in Wisconsin, adding to the Aldrich Chemical Company in Milwaukee, the $9 million "cleanroon" on their Sheboygan Falls campus, and the 80,000 square-foot facility in the UW Research Park in Madison. The Verona development will serve as a "phase two" expansion to complement the work at the Madison facility. SAFC, Inc. was founded in 1989 as Tetrionics and was acquired by Sigma Aldrich Corporation in 2004. The company focuses on customized manufacturing, packaging, and raw material supply services. Sigma-Aldrich has over 6,800 employees in 35 countries. Governor Doyle has set ambitious goals for Wisconsin to capture 10 percent of the market for biotechnology and stem cell research by 2015. To reach these goals, Governor Doyle launched a $750 million initiative to develop stem cell research and biotechnology in Wisconsin. In May, Governor Doyle broke ground on the $150 million Institutes for Discovery, a public-private partnership to advance biological and medical research and the development of life-saving technologies. As part of the next phase of his Grow Wisconsin agenda, Governor Doyle will continue to advance his plan to Innovate Wisconsin. The Governor proposes to accelerate groundbreaking research in the state by rewarding companies that significantly expand their research and development.
