National Fire Prevention Week to be Held October 5-11

For Immediate Release: October 3, 2008
Contact: Tony Hozeny, Department of Commerce, 608-267-9661

MADISON - Department of Commerce (Commerce) Secretary Dick Leinenkugel announced today that National Fire Prevention Week will be held from October 5-11, 2008. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is urging the public to focus on how to prevent home fires during this year's observation.

"Commerce is pleased to partner with the NFPA in encouraging everyone to recognize National Fire Prevention Week by following appropriate fire safety precautions," Leinenkugel said. "I would also like to take this occasion to commend our state's firefighters for their courage and dedication to duty."

It's Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires! is the message of this year's Fire Prevention Week. Fire departments nationally responded to nearly 400,000 home fires in 2006. This year, fire safety advocates will spread the word to their communities that, with a little extra caution, preventing the leading causes of home fires - cooking, heating, electrical and smoking materials - is within their power.

Tips for teaching families and children how to keep home fires from starting in the first place can be found at www.nfpa.org. Teachers are especially encouraged to visit this site for information, games and activities that can help educate students on fire safety. For further information on National Fire Prevention Week or other fire safety issues, contact your local fire department.
