For Immediate Release: February 12, 2009
Contact: Tony Hozeny, Department of Commerce, 608-267-9661

MADISON - Commerce Secretary Richard J. Leinenkugel announced today that the Village of Avoca in Iowa County will receive a $272,500 grant from the Community Development Block Grant - Public Facilities (CDBG-PF) program of the Department of Commerce to fund its water system improvement project.

"It is important to always stay focused on what we can do to create jobs and help our businesses in Wisconsin," Secretary Leinenkugel said. "Investing in infrastructure lays the groundwork for community growth and business expansions."

"This grant will meet a great need in the Avoca community," State Representative Steve Hilgenberg (D-Dodgeville) said. "It will enable the village to improve its outdated water system while minimizing the expense on local taxpayers."

The Village of Avoca is updating its public water system. Plans include infrastructure improvements, like the replacement of water mains. Total project cost is $680,500.

CDBG-PF grants play an important role in helping communities finance a wide range of projects designed to enhance the economic vitality of the community through the provision of community infrastructure, the expansion of tax base, job creation, and increased private investment in downtowns.
